It’s easier than you think to do your bit to help the environment this Christmas. Simply recycling more of the right things will make a huge difference.
You can recycle most cards, envelopes and wrapping paper if it passes the scrunch test. Ensure you remove any sticky tape and decorations such as ribbons and bows before you do so.
Never put batteries in your household waste bins as they could cause a fire. Only recycle them using a proper battery recycling service.
Find your nearest recycling point on the Recycle Your Electricals website.
You can check which items can be recycled and which bin they go in on our A to Z of recycling.
This year, instead of throwing away your leftovers, freeze them. You may be surprised just how many Christmas foods can be frozen such as cooked turkey, ham and your Christmas pudding. Freezing your leftovers will save food and money.
Real Christmas trees will be collected from households that have signed up to our garden waste collection service. Cut the tree in half and place it next to your garden waste bin.

Don’t forget that there are lots of recycling banks in the Borough to take those extra cans, glass, paper, card and plastic bottles that you have at Xmas too. All our recycling banks have signs clearly showing what goes in each container. Please ensure you are placing the correct recycling in each of the containers. Never leave your recycling on the ground around the recycling bank as this is fly tipping and you could get a fine.
There are changes to rubbish and recycling collections over Xmas and New Year with no collections taking place on Bank Holidays on 25 December, 26 December and 1 January.

Please note that the Garden waste service and the bulky waste removal service are suspended over Christmas and New Year, weeks commencing 23 December and 30 December. Normal service will resume from Monday 6 January.
Thank you for all your recycling during 2024.
