Improving school road safety

Family using a zebra crossing at a school

The local community is asked to comment on the Council’s proposed plans to make roads outside St Fidelis Catholic Primary School in Erith and Northumberland Heath Primary School safer by installing two new zebra crossings.

Proposals include;

  1. The introduction of a new zebra crossing on Bexley Road just south of the junction with Ling Road and a second crossing nearby in Brook Street.
  2. Slight extension to the existing buildout located on the eastern side of Bexley Road.
  3. New skid resistant surfacing to be laid on each approach to the crossing.
  4. Tactile paving surfacing for the benefit of visually impaired pedestrians.
  5. The introduction of a no stopping zone (zigzag) road markings normally associated with a zebra crossing approach.
  6. The introduction of double yellow lines as necessary to ensure that pedestrians are clearly visible to approaching vehicles.
  7. Adjustments to the existing ‘School Keep Clear’ markings at the location to suit the new road layout.

Bexley Council’s Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods Councillor Richard Diment said,

Road safety outside schools is a priority for the Council.  We want to ensure that children are safe and that all pedestrians feel confident walking particularly at peak pick up and drop off times.

The Council is committed to providing further crossings near our schools. Other schemes have been identified and these will be consulted on as funding becomes available.”

If you’d like to comment on the proposals, plans can be viewed during normal office hours at Civic Centre, 2 Watling Street, Bexleyheath, Kent DA6 7AT.

The consultation will close at midnight on Wednesday 30 October 2024
