The London Borough of Bexley is celebrating today (16 July 2024) as Lesnes Abbey Woods 'retains official recognition as one of the country’s best parks.

The Green Flag Award signifies to the public that Lesnes Abbey Woods meets the highest environmental standards, is impeccably maintained, and offers excellent visitor facilities.

This 88-hectare ancient woodland provides a unique glimpse into the area's medieval and prehistoric past. Visitors can explore the 12th-century abbey ruins, search for shark teeth and seashells in the fossil pit and enjoy the fragrant herbs and flowers in the Monks Garden.

Lesnes Lodge is a vibrant hub for educational and cultural events throughout the year, including guided nature walks, historical tours, live music, farmers markets, and community festivals. Later this year, a new outdoor educational space will open, offering a variety of activities for residents to enjoy.

Councillor Richard Diment, Bexley’s Cabinet Member for Neighbourhoods, said:

We are honoured that Lesnes Abbey Woods has been awarded the prestigious Green Flag Award for another year.
