LGBT+ History Month

LGBT+ History Month is a chance to celebrate the history and achievements of LGBT+ people while learning about the challenges they have faced over time.

The Mayor of Bexley, Councillor Sue Gower MBE, raised the Intersex Inclusive Progress Pride Flag today (3 February) to mark the start of LGBT+ History Month.

This year, the theme is Activism and Social Change, which looks at how people have worked together to create a fairer and more inclusive world for everyone.

It’s an opportunity to reflect on the progress made and to recognise that there’s still more to do.

The theme highlights important moments in history, such as the Stonewall riots, the campaign for marriage equality and other movements that have shaped society.

It also reminds us that activism comes in many forms—whether through protests, art, or conversations—and that these efforts have helped bring about meaningful changes over time.

There are several events taking part during LGBT+ History Month these include:

  • Queer London; LGBTQ+ history and culture through time – Saturday 15 February from 2.30pm to 4pm at the Central Library. Listen to a fascinating talk by public Historian Sheldon K. Goodman. Visit Eventbrite for details.
  • Screening of Carol at Bostall Library. Saturday 22 February from 6pm to 9pm. Carol is a stunning tale of forbidden love between an aspiring photographer and an older woman navigating a difficult divorce, set in 1950s America. It’s a story of courage, passion, and resilience that perfectly complements the spirit of this month. Spaces are limited. sign up now to reserve your spot
