London Climate Action Week takes place from 22 to 30 June 2024 and to mark it we’ll be highlighting some of the practical activities that are going on all year round in our Borough to help tackle climate change.
The Council runs a School Waste Action Club with a Recycling Officer going into school classrooms and assemblies regularly to teach children about the three R’s – Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and to raise awareness of how we can be greener.
There are tips for students on how to reduce food waste, turn leftovers into healthy meals and information on how to repurpose old items so they can be reused. The importance of recycling and putting the Right Rubbish in the Right Bin is and how crucial this is to our environment is also discussed. If you are a school and want to get involved, email the School Waste Action Club at swac@bexley.gov.uk
We also work with partners to deliver events that include our annual Bexley Eco Festival - this years takes place on Saturday 7 September at Lesnes Abbey Woods. We are also starting to run repair pop-up events across the borough. You can find out more about these events by visiting the Bexley Eco Festival website.
There is a strong community spirit in Bexley and we are very thankful for the support of our volunteer litter pickers who help us keep our wonderful parks and open spaces clean and green and also to other volunteer groups such as ‘Friends of Riverside Gardens’ and ‘Friends of Foots Cray Meadows’ as well as those who help out at Lesnes Abbey Wood and Hall Place. If you would like to volunteer to be a litter picker go to Volunteer to be a litter picker.
