Autism

What is autism?

Autism is a lifelong difference that shapes how people communicate and connect with others. Many autistic people have unique strengths and qualities, such as strong attention to detail, deep focus and creative problem-solving.

While they may sometimes find social interactions challenging or prefer routine and quieter environments, these differences are simply part of who they are, not something that needs to be "fixed."

Autism is something you are born with and many autistic people see it as a positive and important part of their identity. It affects each person differently, which is why autism is described as a "spectrum". Some autistic people need little support, while others may need more.

With the right understanding and support, autistic people can thrive in their own way, building strong relationships, succeeding in jobs and enjoying their unique talents and interests.

Common traits of autism

  • a different way of communicating, often using clear and direct language
  • a unique way of understanding other people's thoughts and feelings, which can lead to honest and straightforward interactions
  • being more sensitive to things like loud noises or bright lights, noticing details others might miss
  • feeling more comfortable in familiar situations and preferring meaningful conversations over small talk
  • taking a bit more time to understand information, often leading to thoughtful responses
  • liking routines and repeating certain actions, which can help create structure and make things feel more organised
