Women’s Night Safety Charter
The Charter
The Women’s Night Safety Charter was launched in 2018 and is part of the Mayor of London’s Tackling Violence Against Women and Girls Strategy and London’s commitment to the UN Women Safe Cities and Safe Public Spaces global initiative.
Since its launch, the Charter has attracted over 600 signatories from a range of organisations and businesses operating across London, ranging from pubs and clubs to Business Improvement Districts, transport providers, and police. 27 London Boroughs have signed up to the Charter, including the London Borough of Bexley.
For more information about the Charter and its signatories, visit the London.gov.uk website.
Our Charter Pledges
Signatories pledge to:
- nominate a champion in your organisation who actively promotes women’s night safety
- demonstrate to staff and customers that your organisation takes women’s safety at night seriously, for example through a communications campaign
- remind customers and staff that London is safe, but tell them what to do if they experience harassment when working, going out or travelling
- encourage reporting by victims and bystanders as part of your communications campaign
- train staff to ensure that all women who report are believed
- train staff to ensure that all reports are recorded and responded to
- design your public spaces and workplaces to make them safer for women at night
The London Borough of Bexley is committed to delivering against these pledges. We take women’s and all residents’ safety at night seriously. We continuously work with partners to ensure that we are raising awareness of and training professionals around the risks at night and that there are support and reporting mechanisms available if something happens.

We encourage local businesses and public partners to sign up to the Charter too and work with us to make Bexley a safe place at night for all. You can sign up to the Charter on the London.gov.uk website.
If you sign up to the Charter, let us know who your champion is so we can work together in promoting women’s night safety. Email us at community.safety@bexley.gov.uk.
