How to dispose of medication safely

Do you have unopened, unused or out-of-date medicines that you no longer need? All unwanted medication should be returned to your local pharmacy for disposal.

Please do not place medication in your household rubbish bins or put them down the sink or toilet. If medicines are not disposed of correctly via a pharmacy then traces can end up in the water system or in the air that we breathe.

It is important to do the right thing with your old medicines, to protect the environment. As a resident you can:

  • recycle the empty cardboard and paper packaging from your medicine in your blue lidded paper recycling bin
  • recycle empty glass or plastic medicine bottles in the white lidded recycling bin
  • do not put inhalers in your household bins as they contain gases which are harmful to the environment

The London Borough of Bexley and the NHS are trialling a new exciting Asthma pump recycling scheme in Bexley. Take your asthma pump to your local pharmacy in Bexley to be part of this important trial and remember to take any other unopened, unused or out of date medicines to the pharmacy at the same time.
