Expressions of interest invited for Sports Clubhouse (formerly Erith Rugby Club)

London Borough of Bexley invite expressions of interest from established and experienced organisations focused on community programmes/activities to manage , maintain and operate the Clubhouse (formerly Erith Rugby Club) and the grass sports pitch floodlights in the public open access recreation ground at this location Northumberland Heath Recreation Ground, Sussex Road, Erith, DA8 1JB.

The Clubhouse has been occupied by Erith Rugby Club for several years and a new occupant is now sought to renovate and activate this site, working with stakeholders to provide a thriving community hub based in the local park.

The changing rooms are attached to the clubhouse via a shared lobby area, and these are currently managed, maintained and operated by the councils Outdoor Recreation Team, along with the grass sports pitches at this location. It would be a requirement for any organisation taking on the lease of the clubhouse to also hire the grass sports pitches at this location. Currently on site are two senior football pitches and one senior rugby pitch. The site can be reconfigured to accommodate more and different sports pitches.

The council would be open to discussions if the new Clubhouse occupant would like to discuss taking on the management , maintenance and operation of the changing rooms, and grass pitches as well.

The Clubhouse building itself comprises of reception/boot room area , function room with bar (approx. capacity 100), separate kitchen with serving area into function room , male and female toilets, and small storage rooms behind the bar. As part of the complex are also defunct public toilets (last used approx. 1980s) which are being used for storage, these would require renovation works to be used for anything other than storage.

Clubhouse previous operating hours were Monday to Friday 8am to 10pm, Saturday and Sunday 8am to 10pm.

The floodlights on the sports pitches can currently only to be operated 8pm till 10pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

There is a dedicated car park for sports users at this location with approx. 60 spaces. This car park is shared by all site sports stakeholder/hirers and is not a public car park.

Northumberland Heath Recreation Ground has an established bowls club consortium, with a self-contained bowls club and green situated within the park . The club has shared access/use of the car park for its member and visiting players.

The Council has recently worked with the Lawn Tennis Association to refurbish the four tennis courts in the park. A tennis operator is being appointed to manage and operate this facility from June 2024.

Within the park is a multi-use games area and a children’s playground which is well used by the local community.

The recreation ground is a popular site with the local community, most users living close by and walking to the facility.

Please note this site and park has suffered from anti-social behaviour issues and the occupant must be able to provide a community programme that would look to address some of these issues and work with stakeholders on this issue.

The Clubhouse is available for new management from July 2024.
